Project 16

For Project 16, Haley, Nicole and I interviewed 2 teachers, an assistant principle and the principle of Scarborough Middle School. We asked them what kinds of technology they have in their classroom, what they wish they had in their classrooms, why technology is important in the classroom and where they see technology in 5-10 years. Here are their responses!

My Final Report on PLN

I have continued to use symbaloo for things we have done in the classroom as well as things outside of the classroom. There are many uses for all the things we have done in this class. I didn't realize when I started how much I would actually learn and how much there was to actually learn about technology. I thought I was pretty good with computers and knew enough about them to get around. This class opened my eyes to a different world of technology. There are so many websites I never knew existed. There are so many different things to use the internet for! Here is my updated symbaloo! Thanks EDM310!

Teacher Post #4

I was directed toward Dianna Krause's blog for my teacher post this week. First off her blog is amazing. There are so many links on this blog. There is so much information. The first blog I posted on was a link she posted about top twenty ways to use google docs. Here is what I posted:
Hey! My name is Carly Dougherty and I am currently a student at the University of South Alabama. I am taking an education media class and was led to your blog! First of all your blog is amazing. There are so many resources, tools and ideas to use! This post is wonderful. This is great list of of ideas to use for each subject! i never knew all you could use google docs for all of this! It is so great! Again, your blog is so great and I’m glad I was led to it! Thank you! I’ll be writing a summary post onto my blog in the next couple weeks so please check it out!


The second blog I posted on was a quiz about "What color are you?" It asks you questions that you rate from 1-4. 1 being least like you and 4 being most like you. It asks you a series of questions basically asking you to describe yourself. Are you competitive, cooperative etc. Here are my results:

The quiz also goes into detail about your color and what it means. This is a great way for children to really see the qualities they think they have themselves.

I commented on Paige's Page in Mrs. Cassidy's class! She has some great blogs with some really good pictures that she drew. The blog I commented on was about Halloween. She said she was going to go as a unicorn! Here is what I posted on her blog:

I commented on Emily's Blog from Gaudet 60. She talked about P.E. and how she loved football, volleyball and soccer. She loves playing outside with her friends but doesn't really like to be one the track! I commented on her post:

I commented on Britney R's blog in Mrs. Melito's Class! She did a blog on Sir Isaac Newton. She explained who he was and what he accomplished. She used wonderful pictures as well! She also has other blogs where is she is breaking down math problems. She does a great job doing this! She seems to be very smart! Here is what I wrote to her blog on Sir Isaac Newton:
My name is Carly Dougherty. I am a student at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama! You have done such a great job with your posts! You did so good with this post. Where did you find all the information about Isaac Newton? You did so good with the pictures as well. I also looked at your other posts and they are so good! Mr. St. Pierre's Class blog was so great. I commented on Yasime's Blog! She talked about her favorite flavors of gum! Fruit was her top favorite! They are allowed to chew gum in class as long as they don't disturb anyone. I took the pleasure of searching around her blog posts and found out she loves horses, reading and movies! Here is what I commented on her blog:

The Little Girl That Was a Lion
Rocio Flores
In the zoo there was a girl that was a lion. Her name was Rose. Rose was 10-years-old. Rose became a lion because a witch cast a spell on her. The witch’s name was Corn. Corn was known for making little girls into lions. Corn lived in a plant. Corn’s plant’s name was Ana. Ana was at the top of a hill. The hill was 10 feet tall.
She lived in the town of Cheeseburger. The town had a bad zoo. The zoo was bad because they never gave the animals food. Rose did not want to be there for a year. One day she saw a new lion coming. Rose was thinking of a plan. Rose said to the other lion that she could go home now. “Will one of you go with me?”
“No,” one answered Rose.
“Look,” Rose said to a lion named Matt, “I am not going to talk to you.”  Rose would not talk to him because he does tricks on her all the time.
“I am not trying to trick you,” said Matt.
“Matt stop it now,” said Rose.
“Stop fighting,” said Matt’s mom.
“Look it is Corn,” said Matt.
“Corn what are you doing here,” said Rose?
“I am here to take the spell off,” said Corn.
So, that is what Corn did. Rose went home after Corn took the spell off. Corn went to the Cornfield and lived there. Two months later, Rose got addicted to eating cheese. One Month after that Rose turned into cheese.

Watch the video Top Ten Tips for Using Technology in the Classroom. Write a paragraph describing your response to these tips. Would you use these in your classroom? If you do what are some of the most important ones? (If you notice, all of these tips are used in the EDM310 class)

I believe he has come up with great tips! I truly think using music in the classroom is extremely important. That was one of my favorites. You can do so much with music and kids really seem to enjoy it when it's music they like. Also using interactive tools like skype in your classroom is important as well! It allows children to talk to people face to face halfway around the world. It gives them something to look forward to. Doing lessons on the smartboard or interactive board are important as well. It is a different and fun way of teaching a lesson. It keeps students interactive and keeps them paying attention more. Of course, setting up blogs and wikis is probably the most important. All of these tips give students the ability to express themselves and gives them the ability to learn technology if different ways. Each of these tips requires the student to learn something different on the computer as well being able to apply in their daily lives! Every single tip that is on this video is something that we have come across in EDM310!

Google Forms

My survey for EDM 310 class was based on the Life of a College Student. I asked questions about work, school, and other activities around the University of South Alabama. Here are my results. 

I had 22 responses on my form. It was on the life of a college student. This first question was  are you a full or part time student. 18 students were full and 4 were part time. The next question was asking what their major was. 13 were elementary ed majors, 5 were secondary ed majors, 2 Physical ed majors, 1 Music ed and 1 Special ed. 

In this picture I asked the question Do you have a job and the second question asked If so how many hours do you work? 13 do have a job and 9 do not work. Of the 13 that work,  only one works 40 hours a week. The rest work between 15-25 hours a week. 

I asked if they were part of sorority or fraternity. All but one said no. The one that said yes is in Alpha Gamma Delta.

I asked on a scale of 1-5 how many hours a day do you do homework? 1 being none and 5 being more than five hours, I had 1 say they don't do homework, 7 rate themselves at a two, 6 rate themselves at a three, 4 rate themselves at a four, and only 4 spend more than five hours a day doing homework. 

How many hours do you spend watching television or playing video games?
1-2 hours- 13 students
2-3 hours- 8 students
3-4 hours-1 student
4-5 hours- no students

I also asked them to check the events they attend at the University of South Alabama.
17-Football; 7-Baseball; 2-Softball/Volleyball; 1-Soccer; 9-Basketball

I asked them to rank on a scale of 1-5 how important it was to attend sporting events at the University of South Alabama.
1 being the least and 5 being the most important they answered:
8 rated one; 5 rated two; 6 rated three; 1 rated 4; 2 rated 5.

I also asked if there were any other events besides sports they were interested in attending at the University of South Alabama. Most of them said no. One said guest speakers.  About 5 said theater, dances, performances. 3 said they would love to spend more time with all events if they could but they can't. 

Progress Report for Project 16

My group, Nicole Kelley and Haley Riviere, are doing our project as video. We are going to interview different teachers and students in some schools around Mobile about technology. We are going to ask how they use technology or how they would use if their school doesn't have the money for technology. We have started discussing what schools and who to use for our project. It is coming along great. We are hoping to start this week on getting some interviews.

First Graders in Mrs. Cassidy's Class
I think it is so great that Mrs. Cassidy is an advocate for technology and pushes it towards her students. It is so great the skills these young children have acquired at just a little age. Imagine the things they will be able to do later on down the road. She has given them one of the greatest tools they are going to need while growing up in their era. It's so great how excited they are about using the internet and it's also equally important that she has shown them the rules and tools to apply to using the internet safely. She is letting these kids express themselves. They are learning things that are going to be so valuable to them in the future.

Cassidy Skype
I think it is amazing the ways people have been able to use technology. It is so great that we are able to use something like skype to talk to people half the world a way. How great it is that children can use skype in the classroom to communicate with other students all around the world. It's just amazing. If I were teaching an elementary class, I would definitely input the use of skype into my class! I would have a class blog that each student posted to, but would also have an area where parents can see lesson plans, games, activities and so forth the students have done or will do in the future. I think the only problem with having/wanting to use computers in the classroom is the fact that some students may not have the ability to do extra learning from home. Unfortunately there are still a lot of children who's family cannot afford a computer! These students would not be able to show their parents what they are learning and get extra practice.

Additional Assignment #3

The most important thing Ken Robinson said in this video is about giving student's medicine. There has been a huge jump in children being diagnosed with ADD/ADHD in past few years. I think it is a cop-out. Teacher's don't want to change the way they have been teaching for years. They can't seem to deal with a student needed more interaction and movement and think medicine is the way to fix this. Unfortunately you are suppressing the ability of this child to express him/herself artistically or any other way. Maybe you should think about changing your way of teaching and let the children move around and experience a different education. Maybe they would be more apt to pay attention! I agreed with everything he said. I have seen videos of his before. He's a great speaker with great insight to the education reform! I don't have any classes other than this in the college of education. In the Physical and Health building I feel some classes teacher's just expect you to learn and be there and sit in your chair and just hope you pass. Other classes are more involved and teacher's give the students the ability to express opinions and learn from each other and be a better student. I think it's important when, as a student, you run across a video and a speaker like this, that you show other prospective teachers. It's important to do research and look at other blogs and videos and learn as much as you can to improve the educational experience of the student. This project was so great! I wish I could figure out how they did it! I think I would probably be the narrator. I like to speak and read things. I'm not very artistic so I think I would be a good narrator!

Teacher Post #3

The first post I commented on was called "We Should Listen to the Kids!" She is basically saying that students don't get the opportunity to voice their opinions. It's been taught that teacher's are always right and student's shouldn't have to have a say! She also posted a video of a little girl speaking about this issue! Here is the comment I left:
Hi! I am from Dr. Strange's EDM31 class at the University of South Alabama. This young lady on here really makes people realize the importance of a child/students opinion. There is so much teacher's can learn from a student's reaction or statement. It's important for teacher's to give the students the ability to comment and have discussions among themselves. It's important for students to be heard and since they don't have the power that teacher's have it's important that we teacher's give them the ability to speak out! We are definitely never to old to learn from a child! Thank you for the blog! I appreciate it!

The second post I commented on was called, "Are Task Boards Useful in the Classroom?". Jenny basically was saying how she used her task boards for younger grades to ensure the learning takes place. She states most children can't stand to sit in a desk and have a teacher teach for long periods of time. Task boards give them the option to have groups and move from different activities! Here is what I posted on her blog:
Hi! I'm a student in Dr. Strange's EDM310 class and I agree with task boards being important for students especially in lower grades! I think having them in groups to learn is great and a good way, like you said to separate the different types of learners and levels! I think it's great you are giving the children the ability to stay on the computer until the project is done! I think it's important for them to love the computer and learn how to do fun things on it! Also, modifying the task board itself is a great way to implement a new and fun way to use them. C4K #3 and #4 and #5, #6, #7

My first blog comment was on the littlevoice/littlescholars blog! The entire blog was fantastic! They use a lot of videos to tell their stories. All the children do all kinds of projects and videos! I watched a few of them and they are really great!




My second blog(#4) comment was called Indy's Intriguing Ideas. I looked around her blog and she is very smart and very artistic. She made a quiz about where she is from which is New South Wales, Australia, and I of course knew nothing about it so I told her I would learn about it and re-take the quiz and hopefully make a hundred. Her quiz was very good. It asked about the bird, the flower, the population among others! Very intuitive! I also commented on her drawing of a postcard they had to do! It was so good! Here's what I said to her on her blog! My name is Carly Dougherty. I live in the United States of America and attend the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama. You’re blog is amazing! First of all I tried your quiz and I knew nothing! I promise I will learn all about where you are from! Second, your postcard is amazing. It’s so beautiful! Did you really draw this? If so you have a wonderful talent! I look forward to visiting your blog more and I hope you keep it up! You are doing wonderfully! I was very impressed with Indy's creativity!


My third blog (#5) was October 17, 2010. His name is David and he attends school about half and hour outside of the capital of Tasmania, Hobart. He is an avid blogger and is doing a great job! He posted a blog about anger. He described a few things that made him angry, like getting in trouble for doing something he didn't do and he also said that sometimes he gets so mad he will punch something! But he said he got mad at his dad one day while moving and was able to relax and help his dad out. So I posted on his blog in return, Hey! My name is Carly and I am currently a student at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama USA. I am taking a class called edm310 and was told to check out your blog, so here I am!! You seem to be doing such a great job!

You’re Dealing with Anger blog is very good! I’m glad you are able to pinpoint what makes you angry! I get angry to. I am sure everyone does! Sometimes if I feel myself getting really angry I will step back from the situation and take a deep breath and count to ten. It really helps me, so maybe it could help you! At least you were able to get through your anger while helping your dad!You are doing a great job blogging! Keep it up!


My fourth blog(#6) was on October 24, 2010. I commented on Jon C's blog! He just started so he didn't have much! His post was that he loved the Minnesota Vikings as well steak and basketball! I commented back Hi Jon! I am a student at the University of South Alabama and am enrolled in a class called EDM310. I was sent to your blog to comment! First of all, I am a huge Saint’s Fan for football! I love basketball as well! Duke and North Carolina are my favorite college teams! I also love volleyball! Steak sounds so good right now as well! I also like chicken and macaroni and cheese! What else do you like? What are your hobbies? How is school? Can’t wait to hear back from you!

I read the blog about a run they had to do to raise money for uganda! She ran 13 laps to raise money! She asked at the end of the blog is you have run? If you enjoyed it? and how long did you run? My name is Carly Dougherty and I am currently a student at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama USA! Congratulations on such a great accomplishment! That is so great that you ran 13 laps!! It’s very important to raise money for other people!! I try and run everyday! It’s great exercise and really good for your heart! The longest I have ever run is 13.5 miles! It took me a long time and was a lot of work! It was worth it though! Keep up the great work on your blog! You are doing great!

Blog #10

I read the article by Morgan Bayda http://morgbayda.wordpress.com/2010/02/24/an-open-letter-to-educators/ and also watched the video included in her post. The video was of a student, Dan Brown, who had dropped out of college because his schooling was interfering with his learning. They both had great points about society today and university's not up to par with society! Here is my response to this post: This post and video were very interesting. I have been taking this class at The University of South Alabama called EDM310 for a about 3/4 of a semester. I started this class a little nervous because of how different it is. We meet only certain weeks throughout the semester and the rest of the time the work and “learning” is up to us! It is a great change of pace and really requires you to be responsible and put your mind to work on your own! I think the video, though he was a little wired, had a great point. If schools don’t start using the technology age to its advantage, society will decide it doesn’t need it anymore. After taking this class and relying on myself for work and learning has given me a new outlook on education. I go to my other classes (mostly my pre-req) and I am in a lecture hall with no interaction with other students and no interaction with the professor! In my major classes for Physical Education they are much smaller and teacher’s do ask for interaction but not the extent of this class! The only downfall I am having with all of this technology age is I haven’t figured out how I am going to implement what I have learned in this class into a PE class. Any ideas? Great post! Tom Johnson's Don't Let Them Take the Pencils Home was a great article. It really showcased the cause and effect of good teaching. He is getting parents involved as well as giving students the ability to work on their own. I feel if you trust students and give them some space they will achieve in a level you would never expect.


I watched the movie Two Questions That Can Change Your Life by Daniel Pink. He asked two important questions. 1. What is your sentence? 2. Are you better today that you were yesterday? I honestly never really thought about having a sentence and the importance of it. I asked myself if I was better today that I was yesterday and I am not sure if I can answer it. I guess since I had never thought of asking myself that question I never really paid attention to my actions day to day. So tomorrow I will ask myself that question and see if I can answer it! I think for now my sentence would be, I want to graduate to provide a better future for my daughter. I'm sure it will change eventually. Everything I do in school is getting me one step closer to providing a better life for my daughter. That's most important. So for now that's all I have. It's definitely something to really think about.

Blog #9

Mr. McClung wrote a blog on his experiences of his first year teaching! He had some great insight and advice for the future teachers! First he mentioned about him only thinking of himself. He thought about his superiors watching him and he forgot about who is most important, the students. He mentioned that communication and technology are very important in the classroom as well listening to the students. They don't have the voice and authority that a teacher has so why not listen to them and give them that voice? He also said not to be afraid of technology and not to worry about perfect lesson plans! Lesson plans don't usually go as planned. He said not to take that to heart and not to be yourself up about not having class go exactly to plan. I responded to his post with:

My name is Carly Dougherty and I am currently enrolled in Dr. Strange's EDM310 class at the University of South Alabama. This is a wonderful blog to read for first year teachers! I agree that communication is one of the most important aspects. Communication with students and with faculty/administrators. i agree with technology use. In this age we have to fully embrace the capacity of technology. It is important to teachers as well as students to be able to know and use technology in and outside of the classroom. I feel like as a teacher I would want my lesson plans to go the way I wrote them and would beat myself if they didn't. I'm glad you posted that you were like that and had to get out of the mindset in order to succeed. I also agree that a teacher you must continuously do learning. Just like doctors and nurses, they have to continually learn what they do. There are so many websites and articles and video to read and watch for teachers that it makes it easy to continue learning. You just have to make yourself want to do it. Again thank you for sharing your first year experiences with all the new/upcoming teachers! I really appreciate your words!

Additional Assignment #2

1. What do you think? If learners are motivated, can they teach themselves?
Yes, I do think if learners are motivated and have the correct materials and tools, can teach themselves. 
2. If those motivated learners are kids, can they teach themselves?
I believe kids have the ability to teach themselves if they have the motivation and resources. Children are sponges and I believe that if they are taught correctly they can teach themselves. 
3. What conditions are necessary for kids to teach themselves? For anyone to teach him or herself?
I believe they have to have someone that is responsible and reliable they can go to for help. I think they need a knowledge of technology and how to use the computer. Knowledge of technology is the most important thing for a student to have to be able to teach themselves.
4. What role do computers and internet access play in the process?
As mentioned before I feel if someone is teaching themselves then it is most likely going to be through the use of technology. Having access to computers and knowing how to use them is very important in the learning/teaching process.
5. What role does motivation, a desire to learn? 
Motivation is a huge aspect of the desire to learn. It is very important to want to learn. My personal experience has showed me motivation is the mindset I have had in the past few semesters. My grades  have become better, my teachers have noticed me more and I enjoy school more. You have to want to learn and not think you HAVE to learn. 
6. What roles do a problem, a question or multiple problems or questions play in the process?
This is where the reliable or responsible teacher that is leading these students to teach themselves. Everyone has to have someone they can go to or email when they have a problem or question.
7. How do you motivate someone to learn?
I believe showing them to have fun and teaching them how to learn without realizing they are learning is important.  Allowing the children/students to do self-assessment and learn responsibility is a great way to show them it is possible to teach yourselves.
8. How are you motivated to learn?
My family motivates me. I finally found something I am truly happy with and I look forward to doing something I love for hopefully a long time. I have been lucky enough to meet great people and teacher's in my classes that motivate me as well.
9. Can anyone who is not motivated to learn learn?
I think you can learn but not the extent that is necessary to fully enjoy what you are learning. I don't think you can put what you learn into your job and class if you aren't motivated.
10. Do you teach yourself? When? Why?
I feel like this class teaches me certain things. I feel responsible for everything and it keeps me on my toes. It has also taught me time management. I teach myself as a coach for volleyball. I look up drills and plays and workouts for my team and for me to know. I do a lot of research for coaching.
11. What role does a teacher (either answer generally or use a specific example) play in your learning?
I feel like have a teacher who truly enjoys what he/she does will give you a better outcome than a teacher who is there collecting a pay check. Like mentioned before I have had amazing teacher's in the Physical Education Department that have encouraged me to be a better student and have really showed me how fun this major is!
12. What is the most important idea, question or emotional response you take away with you as a result of watching this video?
There are some children not as lucky as we are to be able to have both in classroom and out of classroom learning. Some only have the choice to teach themselves.
13. What other questions or issues are raised by this video that should be considered and discussed by aspiring teachers? 
Why are there children in this world as well as other  countries that have no supplies and access to the learning materials that are needed for the growth of learning and education?

Blog #7

Achieving Your Childhood Dreams by Randy Pausch was inspiring. First of all, I really can't say I wrote down dreams as a child. As awful as that sounds, I think my one and only "dream"-if that's what you call it-included sports. For him to be able to achieve all of his dreams in one or another makes me wish I had some sort of list. I jotted down notes on a piece of paper my daughter was drawing on and they are all spread out and in no particular order-probably not smart since I should start at the beginning at the lecture-but I'll try and tell you what I gathered in the best way possible.
Dr. Pausch has achieved so much it's hard to start at one place. First off, his quote, "The brick wall is there for a reason, to stop people who don't want it badly enough." This should be in every classroom, office or gym. This is what people should aspire to reach. The ability to look at the brick wall and say I can beat you. In the Building Virtual Reality class he taught at CMU there were groups of five students and you through out the semester you had the ability to work with about 15-20 people. At the end of each project he gave the students surveys and asked them to fill them out about the other students they worked with. He then put all of it into a spreadsheet and displayed it for all students to see where they stand. It allowed to students to see where they stood with other classmates. It allowed the students to see what other students thought of them. He gave these students the knowledge and the importance of feedback-giving and receiving. This course also gave the students the opportunity to show their projects to the school/community and gave them the excitement of learning.
     The excitement of learning. Having fun. These are things you only hope for when going into a school or classroom. His whole philosophy was pushing students to do better, setting the bar higher and higher and most importantly having fun. His classes focused on group efforts and getting students to become self-reflective. He believes in his students and his work. Some other quotes he mentioned were to focus on others and not yourself. This should be the mission statement of all educators. Isn't that what this job is supposed to be about? Pausch also states the importance of your dreams, how to enable someone else's dreams and the lesson learned from reaching or still going after your dreams. There are many people who play a part in your dreams and successes. People like teachers, mentors, parents and most of all the students whose lives you touch.
     Going back to my goal. As I said I never had a list. I always had one thing and it was sports. In seventh grade I started playing volleyball. Keep in mind, I started playing basketball when I was five. My dad coached girls basketball and my childhood memories involve being at practice or games with him. I also started swimming, playing tennis and dabbled in a little golf but I liked having teammates and not just myself. As I was saying though, I started playing volleyball in seventh grade. It was the basic bump back over the net, three players in the front and three players in the back. Nothing at all special about it. But I remember the feeling I got playing. I have never played this sport before. I had never even touched the ball before. But it was this feeling of this it is. Like Pausch said, "When you know the exact moment that your life changed that's a big deal." This was one of those moments. From that moment on volleyball was what I wanted. I kept up with basketball through Junior year of high school then quit to focus solely on volleyball. I knew whatever I did in life I wanted to be like my dad. Anyone who has read one of my blogs knows how much my dad is respected around this community. Growing up in the gym with him and seeing now all the girls and boys he has coached and taught it's amazing. He is still their favorite. I want that. I want to make that difference. I want to make a difference in education and in volleyball. I am confidant I can do that in volleyball. I have to work on my confidence to do that in Physical Education. Luckily, at South, there are great teachers that I feel will one day be my mentor.
     As Pausch has stated, give people the chance to impress you no matter how long you have to wait for them to show it. What a wonderful saying. There is good in so many kids. Take for instance my best friend. She is a teacher at an inner city school with kids who have no home life and no respect for adults. She treats them like adults and they have come to trust her. It takes a long time to get these kids to respect you and to understand you. She was patient with these kids. Eventually they showed her the type of person they knew they were but didn't know how to show it.
     He leaves this world as a respected, fun and dream-seeking teacher. More than that he leaves a legacy. He leaves a program that is teaching students to learn without making them feel like they are learning. I feel you don't have to be a child to have dreams. I have dreams. I have dreams every night about my future. I wonder am I doing this good enough? Did I put enough into this assignment? Would my parents be proud of me? Most importantly will my daughter be proud of me? As his last lecture, Dr. Pausch gave a "head fake". This lecture was for his children. I only hope to be have half the wisdom and knowledge he has to share with my daughter. Rest in Peace Dr. Pausch.

PLN Report #1

When I started this class I was reading the list of projects and didn't even know what PLN stood for! Now that we have been in this class for awhile, I must say everything that we do leads up to a PLN. I have gotten lucky and really enjoyed all the teacher blogs I have been assigned to so I have added them to my symbaloo account. I have also added my google mail, docs reader. I did some searching on symbaloo and came across a webmix that was made for Education. It has all the tools needed for someone teaching in education! It's awesome! I am enjoying trying to find new things and different websites, people and ideas to follow! If I had not taken this class I would have never known this website existed. It's an easy way to get to something very quickly! Let's my pray I progress as the year goes on!

Blog #6

As I watched the video by Wendy Drexler the realization of being replaced by technology really struck a cord with me. I feel like technology is important, but as I have stressed in previous blogs, I am going into education to make a connection with students. I want to be that teacher that students depend on. I want them to know that I love what I'm doing and excited to teach them. I just don't understand how I can do that on the personal level if I am replaced by technology.
If that really happened. If technology replaced teacher's, then where would all the teacher's be that have been teacher's for 35 years. What about the students like me who are 25 and going to to school to finally do what they know they want to do and in the end are being replaced by technology? I really love technology. I believe it can do great things and bring education to whole new level, but I feel like students would miss that interaction, face to face interaction, of their teacher and other students. I really just hope that we can learn to incorporate both education by teacher and education by technology. On a lighter note, the video gave me great insight on how to do my PLN, which I have been struggling trying to figure out! The video was very interesting and creative.

7th Grade PLN

She has done a great job with her PLN for the age that she is. She is more experienced than I am! She did make good points. She is able to do her assignments the way she wants and how she wants. She said she being online for her science teaches her the responsibility she needs to do her work. She likes that everything is neat and looks really cool online. I think she has done a great video. It seems very interesting and I guess I'm just old school and didn't really think schools went to online learning in middle school! I am very far behind in the education technology age and hope one day I can catch up!

Dr. Wesch made some great points. Sometimes school is not about the students. I have so many big classes this semester, Anatomy and Physiology has 146 students and Biology has 101 students. I feel disconnected from the teachers as well as students. I thrive on having an identity in my classrooms and right now I don't. He says you have to make your own identity or else you won't have one. How am I supposed to make an impact on a teacher who has 100 other students and not to mention more than one class? Dr. Wesch also discusses how we communicate. He brought up points about self awareness. I think as an overall speaker he was fantastic. The videos he showed gave us insight on what we really look like and do. He made it creative and funny. He spoke a little quick at times, but that's how is it! I feel like my life, personal and collegiate life depends on creating an identity. I am 25 and it has taken me this long to figure out exactly what I want to be. When I made the decision to go into Education about a year ago, I decided it be time to take it serious. I used to take a few classes here and there, sometimes not even go to class. I took it for granted. Now that I have a child, work full-time, have a second part- time job as well as go to school full-time, I know not to waste my time or my professors time. I am in Physical Education as South and have made it a point to have a great interaction with my teachers. I have found that the teacher's I have had in the Physical Education building know me by first name, know what I do outside of school and know that I strive to be perfect in their classroom. Without me making my identity known, I would never have the experience I have gotten at South. It is an amazing feeling knowing my teacher's know me and know they expect the most from me.

C4K #1 and #2

My student was Edgar. He is 14 and has an older brother and a younger sister. He said his challenge was to get a good education. I commented back asking for him to tell me more about him. What his favorite music or movies were, things like that. I also told him a little about myself.

Edgar's Manifesto was that he promised to get to bed early so he can wake up and get to school early and be ready to learn. He also said not to be tardy to class and not talk to his friends in the hallway. He promised to be a better student by not talking when then teacher talked so he could pay more attention. The last thing he promised was to get good grades by turning his homework in on time! I commented that I am very excited to see your blog! Your manifesto has started off great. I think all of your promises are great and I hope that you can continue to keep these up! Going to sleep early is very important! Make sure you eat a good breakfast too!! I used to talk a lot in class and realized I was missing out on a lot of great information from my teacher! Good Luck with these! You can do it!

Benefits of Podcasting in the Classroom

I think this video was very interesting. It really showcased the importance of using different technology vices in the classroom. I think it gives the teacher the ability to have students hear different aspects of education and it gives them a different way to learn. I think it also gives the students the ability to be creative and learn how to do podcasts. If I were going to be a teacher in the classroom (I'm going into Physical Education) I would really try to incorporate podcasts into the classroom. It is a way to always keep your lessons you've taught near and gives the students the ability to go back and listen.

This is so great for young kids to experience! It teaches them technology in a fun and useful way. They sound like they are having such a great time and really understanding the abilities of podcasts. Like mentioned before, it gives student's a way to keep up with what they have done through out the year and are able to share all of their projects with other people! The kids seem so excited to do these kind of things and just think they are so young! Imagine what they will be able to do when they are older, just because they started so young!

This is a great site to get started with. It's easy to navigate and it's great to see other teachers working hard to get podcasts started. It makes it something to really think about. Before having to read about podcasts and listen to them, I knew nothing about them. I didn't realize the ease and creativity that comes from doing them. Podcasts give the students the critical learning lessons of technology. I think it is so interesting. I would love to start a podcast, but of course I would have to think of a topic first! Anyways, there are only positive things to say about podcasts.

I read Once Upon a Time, I was THAT newbie by Paula White. She was called in as a teacher ten days into the school semester. The other two classes were full and the veteran teachers picked out ten or so students out of their class to go into her class. Come to find out these students were the “unwanted”. Either family life was different from the norm, work ethic was not taught or applied and some behavior issues were at rise. As a new teacher, this could be considered your worse nightmare. She was able to make a bond with these students as she taught and learned from them. She was able to what veteran teachers hope to do, make a bond. Being able to see students that you have made a difference in their lives ten years later and they still remember you is something I want to achieve as a teacher. My dad had been a teacher for almost 25 years. I go places and people hear my last name and say, “Are you Mr. D’s daughter?” Of course I say yes did he teach or coach you. They always reply with, “He was my favorite teacher. He helped in ways I still use today.” To have that kind of respect from students with all different backgrounds, family lives and personalities, is something I hope to achieve. At the end of her blog post, Mrs. White stated that teachers are sometimes their own worse enemies. The veterans gave her the students they did not want. They didn’t want to have to deal with. As a veteran teacher, shouldn’t you want to make a difference? Shouldn’t want to be the one that says I want to that kid. He has potential. Regardless of race, background, family history, work ethic or behavior issues. Instead, the veterans gave the newbie teacher these students and went on their way. In my opinion, even though she was a new teacher, she was better for those students than the veteran teachers were. I responded to her blog post saying, Dear Paula,I am currently a student at The University of South Alabama. I am taking an education media course and my teacher directed me to your blog. I am very nervous to start out as a teacher. I am terrified I will be horrible, have kids that don’t care and that I won’t make a difference. I would like to hope that more veteran teachers care about what you are saying. A new teacher on their first job is already nervous enough. Why give them a group of “overload” children that you don’t want? Why make it harder for the new teacher to adjust to what is going and who they are dealing with. This post is very inspirational. I am very excited about my journey as a teacher. There are always those students that don’t have the work ethic or don’t know how to apply themselves. There are those students who don’t have the family life we wish all children had. I only hope I can make a bond with those students nobody wants like you have. Thank you. I read Incidental Learning by Paula White. She is discussing her going back to fill in for a Kindergarten teacher in which she used to teach Kindergarten and wants to go back into the classroom and teach again before she retires. She was saying how when reading a book to the class she had a few students not engaged. She gave them the opportunity to sit and listen to her read or go to the other side of the classroom and keep talking quietly to each other. They opted to stay and listen to her. She said she hoped they learned that it's not Okay to talk while someone else is talking and hoped they realized how fun it could be to interact with the whole class. I commented on this post that I am 25 years old and currently enrolled at the University of South Alabama under the instruction of Dr. Strange in his EDM310 class. I have always said that it takes a special person to understand and teach a Kindergarten Class. Just by reading this post I know you are that type of person. Giving five and six year olds the decision to listen to you read the book or go and talk by themselves is something I think most teachers don’t think of. Letting them choose to be a part of a class discussion or not, and having them choose to be in the class discussion is amazing. Teaching them they have a choice and you listen and respect to that choice is something very important for their egos. I have a 3 year old and she is a sponge. I also nanny a little girl who is in first grade now. I was with her when she started Kindergarten and even after a few weeks I saw a huge difference. She was reading and writing and this was all in the first semester. Again, I feel you have that special touch in giving Kindergarteners the ability to share, discuss and have an imagination which is most important. Thank you for the post.

History of the Saints Timetoast

Additional Assignment #1

We were told to use google squared and wolframalpha search engines. Before this assignment I had never heard of either one of these. I google squared Duke Basketball, High Schools in Mobile, Alabama and Anatomy of the body. If I were a sports announcer or sports writer and needed quick stats this was a great way to find it. It gave me a list of the main players at duke, their height, weight, where they were drafted and with who. I also added a column that asked PPG(points per game) and it gave me most of those. For the High Schools it gave me a list of all High Schools in Mobile and a description along with the address and telephone number. For someone just moving to Mobile, this could be a good tool to use to find a school close to your area and you could probably add a column to find out what school is in your area. For the anatomy of the body it showed a few organs and a few systems but also gave me other links to go more in depth in each one. Great way to pull up something quick for a review of some sort. On wolfram alpha I searched my birthday, January 27, 1986. It came  up with the day I was born, how many days (8997), weeks (128) and years (24.63) I have lived. Also told me the sunrise and sunset time as well as the moon's position. It is kind of a fun way to get little facts about your birthday! I also good the University of South Alabama. It came up with how many students, full time or part time, how many were graduate students and how many were undergraduate student and how much tuition was. It also showed the degrees awarded and how many were awarded for each major. Another way to check out schools you are interested quickly and easily. I re-read my post for Did You Know and realized that I may have taken some statistics out of context. Like Dr. Strange said, the Bahamas has a much smaller area to cover than the United States, so of course their technology use is higher. It's easier to connect everyone in the Bahamas because it is so much smaller. I think this made me rethink statistics in a way that I can take what Did You Know says and put into google squared or wolframalpha and see how everything compares. Knowing these search engines exist gives me a better aspect on statistics. It gives me a way to compare different things as well as having a quick lookup. It was definitely an eye opener. 

Also Food for Thought is something I found interesting. This just goes to show the ease and capabilities of the iPAD and apple products all around. I fully enjoy my mac and iPhone and don't know where I would be if I didn't have them!

Teacher Blog #1

My teacher blog is jtspencer.blogspot.com. He discussed on 8/25 how he thought 6th grade students should have one teacher. His main points about this topic were that as the sole teacher he felt he could form a relationship on a higher level with his students. He felt that if he needed to spend more time on a math lesson, he could let it run into a science lesson and just work the time out for the following days. He feels the students make certain connections between subjects and activities when he is the sole teacher. I posted on this blog that I believe having students in teams of four or five might work better. You still have the ability to have a personal relationship with the students. You also have the opinions of three or four other teachers, other than your own. This gives you the ability to discuss student's learning style or beahvior. Is the student a discipline problem in your class? Does the student learn better this way or this way? There is also the ability to have a camaraderie between the teachers to be on the same page. Hopefully as a group you are able to work together towards the betterment of the students.
    On 9/11 my teacher discussed a science experiment he was doing in his classroom. He has his students in groups discussing on how to make a solar powered coffee machine. He put a few of the ideas the students were discussing in his blog. His ultimate question to his readers was, "Is this science?" Seems everyone and I tended to agree it was science. It also the possibility of being engineering (building the project), language/writing(students discuss out loud possible ideas, critical thinking, and write down their scientific method.) My response to this post was that I agree with Amberi. I believe this is engineering and science! The students are engaged in critical thinking, problem solving, debating and so forth. There are endless possibilities for them and it seems like they are excited to do this experiment. As Amberli said, there is no wrong way of succeeding as long as coffee is produced. The students have the ability to discuss different ideas and all work together to come to a conclusion. Good Luck! Hope the students have as much fun as I think they are!

Scott Mcleod. I googled him to see what came up- Associate Professor. CASTLE Director. Blogger. Idea generator. Solution builder. Agitator. Catalyst. If you would like to see more about him you can go to www.scottmcleod.net. He also has a blog that had an interesting post on it. "Don't teach your kids this stuff. Please?" He approaches the technology use of the 21st century very sarcastically! It's great. From what I gather the point he is trying to make is if you are not willing to step into this technological era and learn/teach it, you are going to be decades behind in the future. There is no reason not to use technology. We've discussed pro's and con's of technology in the classroom. Should the teacher allow the student's to teach? Is the teacher illiterate in technology? Should teacher's be up to date on all things technology? There are so many questions and the place you can find all the answers/arguments you want...the computer. So if you think in 20 years technology is still not a part of the classroom, you better think again. Because if not, you are in for a rude awakening.


iSchool Initiative
Wow! Only 17 years old and this student has thought of something that most adults only dream of thinking of. Could you imagine what it would be like? What a world of no books, calculators, paper, printing and etc. could be like? Here's the one problem I have..what about face to face contact with teachers/students? Isn't that what educators do? Teach? How do you have the intimacy and the one on one contact with students? I feel teaching has a lot to do with incorporating technology but also with the ability to provide critical thinking and problem solving. The whole day doesn't have to include technology. I agree it is a huge part of it. And soon, it seems, will be all of it. I know for me, I always have my favorite teachers, the one's who taught me life lessons. How can we teach life lesson's if there is no face to face interaction? How can we be able to enjoy the joy of seeing the children each day and teaching them personally? I love the idea of going green and not having papers and books and what not. I hate the idea of not being in a classroom and looking at my students face to face. Hopefully one day, in the near future, there will be a balance of technology use in the classroom and teacher use in the classroom.





What is so funny about this next post is that I have seen it before. About 20 times! I ran across it one day and began sharing with all the friends and family I know on facebook! They truly enjoyed it, as did I. This post is like a role-reveral. It explains what the past generations have DONE to this world and what the future generations WILL DO in this world! This is one of the most positive outlooks someone has for our generation. People are constantly telling us if we continue how we are this world be destructed. This is not a quick fix generation. We are ready and willing to put time and effort into anything that has importance. It is evident that people assume in 30 years technology will take over. Which it very may will. But in the meantime respect this generation. We grew up differently than you (the adults). We grew up in a generation that you made a quick fix society. You made us believe money will buy happiness. You made us believe that the only beauty is on the outside. How do you expect us to change, when you wont change? How do you expect us to live without technology when you supplied it to us? I believe there is a change coming, and it is this generation. We are going to give 100% of ourselves to everything and anything that is worth believing in. This world will be a better place because of us and the future generations to come.





Virtual Choir = Mesmerizing. Amazing. Astounding. I couldn't take my eye's off it. How did he do it? It's things like this that make me truly appreciate the art form of technology. To put something together, with people that have never met, and make it sound like a choir...that takes skills! Skills I can only hope to learn. This was just amazing. This video shows the creative side of technology. The ability to put things together and make something out of nothing. What an incredible job he has done. There is something about this that truly makes something click about technology. It's not just used for social and educational purposes. Videos like these allow someone to be creative as well social and educated. Very moving video.

Blog #3

This video is reminder of what student's do and how technology has impacted their lives...for better or worse? You decide. I can relate to a lot of what these students are saying. I wonder how the creator of this movie was able to come up with this. Where did these statistics come from? We hear about how much students/teens/children play video games, text, send email or check facebook daily and weekly. I'm not sure if this video is showing the negative or positive aspects of technology? Bringing your laptop to class and not using it for classwork seems like a negative. Having to use the chalkboard, which can't show pictures and video, seems to be a positive toward technology. So, as students, how do we balance the use of technology? How do we use it for learning and school more than for social networking? We can't. The children and students of this day and age are raised on technology. Phones, computers and television are the source of entertainment for children these days. Where did the line between watching an hour of television or playing on the computer get crossed and turn into 500 pages of emails by a student in a semester? Why does someone spend money on books and never use them? Possibly because they can get every answer off of the computer. If you think about it, The University of South Alabama has made a huge jump into technology. I know in the Education Department, most of the material I use in my classes are available online. What will the future schools hold? Will everything become strictly online? Only time will tell.




It's Not About the Technology


Ms. Hines wrote something that may help future educators. There is a certain luxury to have access to the technology we as educators or future educators have. It takes a certain type of educator to be able to use this technology correctly. Ms. Hines states that teachers must be learners. I don't know how many times I have been in a class where the teacher didn't know how to pull something up on the computer, how to use the smartboard or anything else that involved technology. Since these teachers didn't know how to do it, and obviously weren't going to put the time in that is needed to learn these things, we as student's suffered. Technology, I feel can give a child a sort of freedom from the classroom. As Ms. Hines puts it though, technology is useless without good teachers. Being able to provide innovation and learning through all different ways, not just the use of technology, is what makes a good teacher. Problem solving and critical thinking are ways to teach a child for the future. If you are going to use technology in the classroom, please do your students a favor and learn how to do it correctly. If not you are doing those students an injustice.


Is Is Okay To Be a Technologically Illiterate Teacher?


Karl Fisch wrote a post on his blog that was very intriguing. He first off states that a teacher who is illiterate in technology is like a teacher 30 years ago that couldn't read or write. I'm not sure if it is to that extreme...yet. I know my dad is a teacher and is not the most technological savvy person. BUT, he is willing to learn. That's where the difference comes in. If a teacher is willing to learn technology, then we respect that and give him/her the tools necessary to succeed in learning/teaching themselves technology. I am only 24, and I still don't know as much as I want to know about technology, and probably never will. This EDM310 class is giving me insight on what kind of tools there really are out in the technology world. What about these teachers that have been out of college for 20-30 years and never had this experience that we are lucky enough to have? Let's face it. When we become educators, our students will expect us (my generation and the one's to come) to know exactly what a blog is, twitter, facebook, del.is.cous and anything else that comes from this technological world! Teacher's do need to make an effort to incorporate technology in classroom and into their lesson plans. I'm afraid though, right now, students expect their teachers not to know anything about technology. Which is the point that, I think, Mr. Fisch was trying to make? I could be totally wrong..but that's what I got! Let's hope that educators are willing to learn and be taught through this technological process...if not...maybe they are like teacher's 30 years ago who couldn't read or write. Or as someone posted..maybe they are just too lazy.

Technology and Creativity-Vital Aspects of Education (Blog #2)

Did You Know 3.0
I watched this video on youtube.com by Karl Fisch titled Did You Know 3.0, and I have to say I was a bit overwhelmed. There were so many facts and numbers and statistics flying at me, I felt like I couldn't keep up. What I did manage to comprehend is that this day in age is an ever changing cycle of technology. Who knew that half of what we learn in our first year of college is considered outdated by our third. How do we keep up? How can the United States of America keep up with the growing population of China or India? They have almost 2-3 times more babies in four minutes than we do here in the United States. We are no longer the technological capital of the world. It's time for us to catch up with other countries like China and Japan. Is it sad that the amount of text messages we send and receive in a day could total the population of the planet? Has technology gone too far? Are we still able to converse and have intimate or personal relationships with people without using technology to the extent that we do? What about in the years to come? It's said supecomputers will be built that exceed the computational capacity of the human brain. Is it just me or does that make anyone else nervous and excited all in the same time? I feel like I can't keep up with the ever changing technology, but the truth is, I want to.

Mr. Winkle Wakes
Mr. Winkle Wakes by Matthew Needlemen addresses the absence of technology in the schools. As I mentioned before we are in a world that is ever changing through technololgy. As scary and nerve-wrecking as it may be to learn, it is important. Our students should know the basics of technology. It should be a part of their daily lives in school. Whether it's to assign a reading assignment online or to present a powerpoint presentation in class, technology should be just as important to education as the teachers who are teaching it. There should be required classes for students of all ages to take part in the technological change of education and of life in general. How long before, we as educators and parents, go without showing our children the importance and usefullness of technology, as well as including it the classrooms?

The Importance of Creativity by Sir Ken Robinson

Expanding a child's creativity should be of utmost importance to educators. Creativity should be as important as literacy according to Robinson. There is a huge interest in education and it goes extremely deep within people. Education is meant to take people into a future that we can't grasp. Like mentioned before things we learn now aren't going to be important in three years. Don't we try to teach our children to express themselves in different ways? So why is it that teachers/educators supress all creativity? Like Robinson said about the ballet dancer. Her teacher's were continuously trying to get her to sit still and stop fidgeting when really she just needed an outlet for her creativity. You hear educators say there is a time and place for creativity and that is PE. Why not incorporate creative exercises in your classes as well as PE? Let's give the students an outlet to express who they are and who they want to be. Let's allow the students to be creative with the hierarchy subjects such as math and language arts. Include creativity in every class and subject and see if you can't get the student's attention. See if the student's won't be more in tune to the subjects and to the variety of ways their minds can think out of the box. As adults we strive for perfection. As educators we strive for perfection. Perfection doesn't exist. Robinson says that we are educated out of creativity. Educators need to teach student's that mistakes are okay. It is a way life. If we don't make mistakes how else will learn? Allowing a child to show their creative side allows for the child's innovation to show through. Without creativity how else are we going to know our children or students?

Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts
This video by Vivki Davis is amazing. She has the ability to take a small school in south Georgia all over the world through the use of technology. The way she allows her students to teach the class as well as teach her new things is very empowering. There comes a time when school is just boring. As Dr. Strange would say, they burp-back everything that is taught. They aren't learning. In Vicki Davis's class they are not only learning, they are teaching. These students receive knowledge way beyond the knowledge I received in high school. The attention these students showed towards Vicki is astounding. She really gives these students the reigns to do as they please. She allows them to show creativity. Which coincides what was mentioned before.
